Ep. 297 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

Led Zeppelin played Kyoto, Japan on October 10, 1972 on their second (and last) tour of the country. This is a merge of two excellent sources, put together and speed corrected by Dario Romero. The sound is very good as is the performance. You’ll like it. Where else are you gonna hear The Rain Song played with a wah wah?

The band are now the biggest band in the world and were set on making sure everyone knew it. They play songs from the as yet unreleased Houses of the Holy album. I love hearing audiences hear Zep songs for the first, and this doesn’t disappoint. I play The Song Remains the Same (called The Campaign at this point), The Rain Song, and an Over the Hills and Far Away in which Robert sings the original higher melody for one of, if not the last time.

Ep. 296 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

1995 was a great year for Zep fans. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant had finally reunited, and were touring with a huge ensemble including (not one, but) two orchestras, and the guitarist for the Cure…. and a hurdy gurdy. It worked out splendidly.

This is October 26, 1995 at Madison Square Garden, where Jimmy and Robert played a smashing gig. I play No Quarter (Unledded version), In the Evening/Carouselambra (unreal how good it is), and an incendiary Kashmir, with real strings and not synth or mellotron. It’s good stuff, people.

Ep. 293 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is one of Robert Plant’s greatest shows. He’s full blast and the rest of the band is right there with him. August 7, 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland right before heading the US for another amazing tour. You can’t get better than 1971 Led Zeppelin, and it’s so cool to hear them play Zep IV songs to an audience that had never heard them yet.

I play what is possibly the first live performance of Celebration Day, an incredible Black Dog in which Robert may very well exceed his album vocals, and one of my favorite encore numbers of theirs, Eddie Cochran’s Weekend.

Ep. 283 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is one of the canonical ‘best of’ shows for Led Zeppelin. April 26, 1969 at the Winterland in San Francisco is a high water mark for a band with very… high water. Robert Plant is beyond belief and the rest of the band meets that level, just run with it.

I have covered this show in the long long ago, but I have not repeated any songs, so we have fresh tunes to enjoy. I play Communication Breakdown (the show opener), a How Many More Times that can’t get any better, and a psychedelic cacophony which is As Long As I Have You. This is among the best of the telecaster days. You’ll like it.

Ep. 279 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

Today we hear some music from Led Zeppelin playing San Diego, 5/28/73, on a soundboard recording remastered by DADGAD. This show has some towering highs and tumbling low points.

I play two of the highlights. First is a smokin’ Since I’ve Been Loving You with gorgeous, smooth cooooool jazz piano from Mr. Jones, and Jimmy delivers in spades. Then I play glorious Whole Lotta Love with a trillion medleys, played with abandon and joy, like it’s 1971. Some magic here for real.

Ep. 272 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is a firecracker of a show recorded the month following the Royal Albert Hall gig, which is featured on the Led Zeppelin DVD. February, 28, 1970 in Copenhagen, Denmark. We have The Nobs performing, to placate the wrath of the elders of the Von Zeppelin family. Zeppelin delivers in Copenhagen, historically, and this show is now different.

So, instead calling themselves Led Zeppelin, on this one night the were The Nobs. This is both in homage of promoter Claude Nobs, and play on then slang term for male genitalia, your knob. Remember they were all in their early 20’s. 😉

I play an embryonic and powerful Since I’ve Been Loving You, a gorgeous Organ Solo/Thank You, and finish up with Bring it on Home. Great band. Great show. Great Scott!

I play a nice show from July 7, 1973 of Led Zeppelin lighting up Chicago. Robert’s voice is in rough shape, but not as bad as the night before. Jimmy and Bonzo ably pick up any slack left by Mr. Plant.

I play Over the Hills and a raucous Dazed. Good stuff. Performed 51 years ago, today.

Epmix. 270 – The Heart of Markness Led Zeppelin Podcast

This is a wonderful, clear, stereo recording of the legendary, and officially released (with a bunch of cuts and edits) April 1, 1971 performance at the Paris Theater, in London. Jonesy’s fat bass sounds so good in the left channel.

I play a nice punching Communication Breakdown with a very well represented hi-hat in the mix, and finally an epic Whole Lotta Love with a million well defined medleys (which aren’t in the official release) like Bottle Up and Go, Mess of the Blues, and a lovely For What It’s Worth. I value the complete performances as they have the juice, the magic, whereas the official release has a great Whole Lotta Love, but without all the bells and whistles which make the band magical.

This is an incredible recording from Saint Mike Millard on his blessed Nakamichi, of Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on March 27, 1975. This is one of the legendary marathon shows, running more than 3 hours, in gorgeous full stereo. This is a fresh transfer made by JEMS and lightly mastered by DADGAD. It’s a keeper for sure.

I play a funky Over The Hills and Far Away and glorious improvisational No Quarter for us, as a taster for the full show, which is available below. Jonesy and Bonzo are perfectly synced in this amazing recording. You’ll dig it.
