Ep. 38 of The Heart of Markness Podcast

This one was a joy to do, children. Jan. 12, 1975 was the first show of Led Zeppelin’s 1975 tour (supporting Physical Graffiti), and there were some problems.

Jimmy Page had broken the ring finger on his left hand, and Robert Plant’s voice was ravaged from a flu. They modified their set list, removing Dazed and Confused, and added When The Levee Breaks, and Wanton Song to this show. When they got to America they would add How Many More Times to substitute for Dazed until Jimmy’s finger could handle it.

We listen to Levee and Wanton Song, and they’re awesome. Enjoy!

Episode 34 is up! Led Zeppelin in Copenhagen, May 3, 1971. This is an amazing show, in the Top 10 for sure, if just for the only performances (I think) of Four Sticks and Gallows Pole EVER. I also play Stairway because it’s a performance from before the release of Zep 4, and no one in the audience had heard that song before. Not the best recording, alas, but one of Zeppelin’s best shows. Wild and free. Enjoy.

Ep. 31 – Heart of Markness Podcast

I’m too good to you people. For Thanksgiving I give you the entire set played by Led Zeppelin, at the Dallas International Pop Festival (Aug. 31, 1969). It’s in excellent soundboard stereo. It’s a matrix which means they mix in some of the audience source to fill missing bits, and to add some ambience and atmosphere to the dry soundboard recording. They did a great job.

This show is awesome. It’s short (an hour) because they had to catch a plane home. This is the last show in their summer tour. They were stars. When they returned a few months later, they were superstars. They started 1969 as nobodies. Amazing.

Here it is. What is arguably the best performance of Dazed and Confused ever. The Europe 1973 Led Zeppelin tour was indisputably the musical high point of the band’s career. They were operating at peak efficiency, intensity, and ability. Except for Robert whose voice had lost the amazing range and volume of the early days.

Any show from this tour is a gem, and any Dazed and Confused from this tour is a contender for best. I chose this one based on feedback from fans on Twitter. It’s a great recording (Winston Remastered) and it’s fiercely intense.

Jimmy’s playing is the best it’s ever been. It’s like he’s in 4K HD (or IMAX) rather than 1080p. There are layers upon layers of genius. He sticks the landing on everything he attempts, and Bonzo is borderline thrash metal drumming in parts.
